Lesson34 A happy discovery

Antique( [ænˈti:k]n。古玩,古董 )shops exert (施加(影響、壓力等)a peculiar fascination on(使出一種奇特的魅力 ) a great many people。 The more expensive kind of antique shop where rare objects(珍稀物品) are beautifully displayed(vt。顯示; 陳列; 展開,伸展) in glass cases to keep them free from dust is usually a forbidding place(令人望而生畏的地方)。 But no one has to muster up courage(振作; 鼓起勇氣) to enter a less pretentious antique shop(不那麼自命不凡的古董店)。 There is always hope that in its labyrinth( [ˈlæbərɪnθ]錯綜複雜的事物 ) of musty, dark, disordered rooms a real rarity([ˈreərəti] 珍品,罕見的東西)will be found amongst the piles of assorted(把…分類) junk that litter( [ˈlɪtə(r)]vt。& vi。

No one discovers a rarity by chance(偶然地,意外地;)。 A truly dedicated([ˈdedɪkeɪtɪd] 專注的,投入的;)searcher for art treasures(藝術珍品)must have patience, and above all, the ability to recognize the worth of something when he sees it。 To do this, he must be at least as knowledgeable as the dealer(和商人一樣博學)。 Like a scientist bent on(下決心,決定做某事) making a discovery, he must cherish(懷有,抱有(希望)the hope that one day he will be amply(adv。

My old friend, Frank Halliday, is just such a person。 He has often described to me how he picked up a masterpiece for a mere &5。 One Saturday morning, Frank visited an antique shop in my neighbourhood。 As he had never been there before, he found a great deal to interest(vt。 The morning passed rapidly and Frank was about to leave when he noticed a large packing-case lying on the floor。 The dealer told him that it had just come in, but that he could not be bothered to open it(他懶得開啟它)。 Frank begged him to do so and the dealer reluctantly prised(vt。撬動; 捕獲; 欣賞;) it open(商人不情願地把它撬開了。)。 The contents were disappointing。 Apart from an interesting-looking carved dagger(雕花匕首), the box was full of crockery( 陶器; 瓦罐;), much of it broken。 Frank gently lifted the crockery out of the box and suddenly noticed a miniature( [ˈmɪnətʃə(r)]adj。小型的,微小的; ) Painting at the bottom of the packing-case。 As its composition([ˌkɒmpəˈzɪʃn]創作; 構圖 )and line reminded him of an Italian painting he knew well, he decided to buy it。 Glancing at it briefly, the dealer told him that it was worth &5。 Frank could hardly conceal(vt。隱藏,隱瞞,遮住) his excitement, for he knew that he had made a real discovery。 The tiny painting proved to be an unknown masterpiece by Correggio and was worth thousands of pounds。
