田黃石（Field-yellow stone），簡稱“田黃”，產於福州市壽山鄉壽山溪兩旁之水稻田底下，呈黃色而得名。是壽山石品種中的珍品。廣義的田黃石指“田坑石”，狹義的田黃石指田坑石中發黃色者。物理性質、工藝美術特徵方面，田黃石與壽山石相近，已成為獨立的印章石品種。

田黃石是壽山石系中的瑰寶，素有“萬石中之王”尊號。其色澤溫潤可愛，肌理細密，自明清以來就被印人視為“印石之王”。數百年來田黃石極受藏家至愛，正如俗語所說：“黃金易得，田黃難求”。

早在一千多年前，我國已有人開始採集，到了明清兩代田黃石更是盛名於世。許多達官顯貴，文人雅士競相刻意收集田黃石。相傳清初時期皇帝祭天，神案上都少不了一方上品田黃石。因此，田黃石一直盛名不衰，身價倍增，曾有古話“一兩田黃一兩金”。

蘿蔔紋

是田黃石的沁色通道，眾所周知，原本是山中礦石的田黃石胚，經過溪水長期的沖刷滾動，磨圓了稜角，淘淨了雜質，形成了卵形的田黃石胚胎，然後又被地表的虛土掩埋在溪谷沙石泥土的底層，在周圍含鐵土壤、水分及溫度的浸漬與影響下，對田黃石起了沁色（自然加色）作用。這種漫長而十分特殊的沁色過程，使田黃石的色澤自然瑰麗，而肌理隱現的蘿蔔紋便是田黃石沁色的通道。或者說沒有田黃石的蘿蔔紋，就不會有田黃石桔皮黃、金黃、桂花黃、熟慄黃，枇杷黃，奶黃等顏色形成的必要條件。

自古有“無格不成田的，無筋不成田”的古訓，所以，購買那些沒有紅格、紅筋的所謂田黃石是要特別小心關注質地。 紅格紅筋是判斷石田黃石的十分重要的特徵，此田黃的紅筋十分明顯，體現出上乘的質地，為頂級田黃特徵。
